Past Seasons

2023-2024 Season: ACDA Conferences, Sleepers, Awake! Larger Than Life, & Love’s Philosophy

Our 2023-2024 season was one of our most ambitious yet! Both Ensembles performed at American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) conferences — the Treble Ensemble was a featured group at the Connecticut ACDA Fall Conference in October, and the Mixed Ensemble was invited to perform at the ACDA Eastern Region Conference. Our winter concert series, “Sleepers, Awake!” was well received by some of our largest audiences since returning to singing in 2021. In the spring, the Treble Ensemble performed “Larger Than Life”, which featured a wide array of works about that which is bigger than us, including the East Coast premiere of Eric Tuan’s “nagasaki”. Closing out the season, the Mixed Ensemble gave a performance of “Love’s Philosophy”, which featured the NYC premiere of Alex Berko’s “You Through Me”, plus our works by our three Competition for Young Composers finalists.

2022-2023 Season: Winter Walk, Concord & Time, Liminal Spaces, & All The Small Things

Highlights from our 2022-2023 season included a performance of Benjamin Britten’s classic “A Ceremony of Carols” by the Treble Ensemble, which featured harpist Violetta Marie Norrie; a winter concert program, “Concord & Time”, full of harmonically dense music by the Mixed Ensemble; “Liminal Spaces”, a concert about the grey moments in life, which featured Matthew Lyon Hazzard’s gut-wrenching three-movement work, “The Ocean Between Us” for SATB choir, string quintet, and piano; and “All The Small Things”, a program full of works about the small things in life, which included pieces by our 2022-2023 Competition for Young Composers Finalists.

2021-2022 Season: Gather Together + Metropolis

After 18 months of virtual choirs and Zooms, YNYC performed “Gather Together”, a concert series of tons of holiday favorites with themes of gathering, community, and hope, featuring works by Howells, Fissinger, Whitacre, Szymko, Poulenc, and more. In the spring, we finally performed our “Metropolis” concert series, which featured works by our 2019-2020 Competition for Young Composers Finalists.

2020-2021 Season: Metropolis Reimagined

How does a choir “choir” during a pandemic? During the 2020-2021 season, we embarked on a journey to find out what it means to be a New York City-based vocal organization during a time when we can’t gather in person. Both of our ensembles gathered weekly on Zoom. We held score study classes, social events, welcomed featured guests, and produced three virtual choir projects. Our “From a Distance - A YNYC Holiday Cabaret” performance was warmly received in December, and a final public performance, “In Between,” took place in May 2021.

2019-2020 Season: Holiday Modulations + Metropolis

To kick off our 2019-2020 Season, we performed “Holiday Modulations”, a concert series featuring holiday music sung in a whole array of choral formations. Our planned spring concert series, “Metropolis”, had YNYC set to explore every corner of the great city of New York through song. While we were able to perform one of our concerts, the COVID-19 pandemic cut our season short. However, we were able to finally perform a modified version of the series in June 2022!

2018-2019 Season: On Time

Singing is the ultimate form of living in the present, but can also help us reflect on the past, as well as create hope for a better future. Choral singing, in particular, requires us to physically come together as a community to share in the organic creation of art that transcends time. In this season, YNYC told stories of the past, present, and future so that we may better understand the role of time in our lives.
